This charming book sellers courtyard, on the site of the Byzantine book and paper market, can be entered either from Beyazıt Square or from inside the Grand Bazaar Early in the Ottoman period, printed books were seen as a corrupting influence and were banned in Turkey, so the bazaar sold only manuscripts. On 31 January 1729 İbrahim Müteferrika (1674–1745) produced the first printed Turkish book, an Arabic dictionary, and today his bust stands in the centre of the market. Book prices are fixed and cannot be haggled over
The Second Hand Book Bazaar (Turkish: Sahaflar Çarşısı) has been a book and paper market since Byzantine times. Located next to the Beyazit Mosque, it was a place to publish and distribute books as as it served as an important literary and intellectual center during the Ottoman period . Over time, as similar markets opened around the city, the çarşı lost its former importance. Although it mainly became a place to buy books for the Turkish University exams, it still is a fascinating place where one can browse through. The bust in the interior courtyard is of İbrahim Müteferrika who in 1732 printed the first book in Turkey.
Very good book bazaar!
It is wonderful helpful place. It contains novels ,books in Turkish, English and Romanian languages, and there are Islamic books. Students can find their university's book here and can bargain with the seller to reduce the price..
I have visited this place couple of times, it is historic and very good place if you love books. Unfortunately there are not manh books in English, but it is worth a dig - you may discover some good finds.
Lots and lots of books in reasonable price, Turkish learning books available in many foreign languages
Sahaflar Bazaar, which is located near Beyazıt Square, is an indispensable part of Istanbul. Here you will find countless book shops, second-hand books, shops selling antique items, and street walks.
