Bali 2008: 29. According to police reports, at the time of its dissolution in 1915, it simply served as a cover for an illegal brothel; a historic landmarc and a relict of a moral dispute within the jewish community of the nineteenth and early twentieth century :)

These are the ruins of the Or Hadash synagogue in Galata. It was originally built in the late 19th century by Ashkenazi Jews. It was abandoned and sold in 1985 and now stands dilapidated and awaiting restoration. Hopefully it can be rescued and returned to the Jewish community and this important part of Istanbul’s cultural heritage will be preserved. You can still see the faint traces of Hebrew letters over the main entrance.
