ÇEKOOP is an environmental cooperative, founded by volunteer pharmacists in Izmir, in 2010. Community pharmacists are directly responsible of collecting and disposal of unused or expired prescribed medications by law. Without a proper disposal programme, not only we face severe environmental damage, there will be an increasing risk of drug abuse and drug poisining via prescription medication falling into the wrong hands, such as children. With these concerns, under the leadership of Sule Ilkkursunlu, Pharm. and her volunteer collagues started to run a take-back Project to collect household medication and send it to a proper licensed disposal facility. Today CEKOOP is operating a country-wide drug disposal programme, the amount of the collected drugs had reached 400 tons by last year.
