Perched on the Golden Horn, this is the most upbeat and thoroughly European museum in Turkey. It houses both permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, providing a showcase for many of the eccentric and talented personalities who have shaped modern art in Turkey, and reflecting the main trends and themes of Turkish art from the early 20th century to the present day. Many of the paintings and drawings are from the private collection of the Ecacıbaşı family, who founded the museum. The collection includes abstract art, landscapes, watercolours and the plastic arts as well as a sculpture garden and a stunning exhibition of black-and-white photography. Exhibitions by contemporary artists from abroad are held regularly, as the museum embraces “Modern Experiences”.

Istanbul Modern was founded in 2004 as Turkey’s first museum of modern and contemporary art. Committed to sharing Turkey’s artistic creativity and cultural identity with the local and international art worlds, the museum hosts a broad array of interdisciplinary activities. Istanbul Modern embraces a global vision to collect, preserve, display and document works of modern and contemporary art, photography, design, architecture, new media and cinema. It acts as an intermediary in the sharing of Turkey’s cultural identity with the international art environment. It supports the artists in their productions and their efforts to form international partnerships. Aspiring to make art easily accessible by the masses, Istanbul Modern provides education programs to art followers of all ages. Through its collections, exhibitions, and educational programs, the museum aims to instill a love of the arts in visitors from all walks of life and encourage their active participation in the arts. Established in a building occupying an 8,000 square meter site in Karaköy on the shores of the Bosphorus, where it hosted exhibitions and events for 14 years, Istanbul Modern has now moved to a temporary space in Beyoğlu, where it will welcome visitors from May 2018 onward for three years while its new building is being constructed. The museum offers a variety of cultural activities in its permanent and temporary exhibition halls, photography gallery, spaces for educational and social programs, library, cinema and store.
It is way smaller than I was expecting, but there were nice exhibitions that I enjoyed. Tickets are relatively expensive for the size. I was checked very thoroughly by the security, even more than at an airport. There is a garderobe available for your jackets.
As Istanbul offers huge amount of historical places and art, the museum of modern art gives the visitors a small piece of the opposite. Great way of escaping the bustling city.
If you like art, I'd suggest you to visit it.
We like it despite the fact that museum is a bit smaller than we thought Current exhibition of Selma Gurbuz was well set and was very inspiring to me.
Actually very poor and boring museum. Nothing much to see or do.. 65 TL Adult entrance fee \u200d️ 2 waisted hours in Istanbul. I would recommend going to other fun and actually very beautiful interesting attractions this amazing city has to offer
I hardly leave this place thinking \that was a waste of time\. They seem to always manage to appeal both to general public and to those art fiends. Shows could change a bit more often but if you are visiting that will not effect you. Nice but pricey gift shop. One can find exquisite gifts. Though pricey bit probably does not effect those esrning Dollar or Euro
