Our mission is to democratize social robots to help people stay more active, so that they can live independently and age healthily. Our target audience of users are people who need assistance the most and our first product offerings will provide support to people who suffer from dementia. We believe robots should have three major capabilities; (i) social, to establish basic conversation with the user, providing the most natural interaction, (ii) cognitive, to learn from its user so that it can provide appropriate assistance, (iii) interactive, to physically respond to the user’s actions and creating engaging experiences.. These three functionalities in our robots: Social, Cognitive, and Interactive, forms the backbone of sciRobot. Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people worldwide. Although there is no treatment to cure dementia or alter its progressive course, research shows that regular physical activity has significant improvements in affective state, functional skills and sleep quality of the dementia patients. This improved state in dementia patients can also help reduce the stress family caregivers often feel from intensive caregiving duties. Since dementia patients have little or no interest in doing activities alone, it is near impossible for them to follow a regular activity program. For family caregivers who are maintaining a career, their own family, and caregiving duties, providing sufficient physical activity support to their loved ones who suffer from dementia is a difficult responsibility. sciRobot aims to close this gap with products that help people who suffer from dementia stay more active.
