One of the most impressive place I have ever visited in my life. Located along Akhurian river which is Turkish - Armenian border, Ani is medieval great city of Armenians dating back 5th century. 35 mins away from Kars city center and the road is in great condition. Public transportation is a bit tricky but very convenient if you are driving. Ani is in UNESCO World Heritage List. It is like a hidden gem on border. Most structures are worn due to lack of restoration, natural disasters and possibly climate but they still stand still like alive. St Gregory of Abumarents, Tigran Honents, Minuchir and the cathedral are the most popular structures. Do not forget to climb the citadel. I highly recommend to visit in spring.

Ani Ruins, amazing ancient city to see, a must see. Visit Kars and visit Ani, I may say. Firstly if you visit Kars in winter time and especially without a tour, most comfortable way to reach Ani Ruins from Kars is hiring a local driver. Secondly it is a quite wide area to discover, so be prepared and take your time for walking and discovery. While traveling through the zone you may hear the sound of mightiness, resonates with ancient energy and an opportunity to explore amazingly crafted cultural patterns. Impressive ancient architecture, richness in paintings, gorgeous ruins, grand walls of fortress, flashback to the life in caves; all are in Ani Ruins. It is the true border for cultural patterns.

Awesome place! Amazing landscape and historical buildings. Hope, they'll begin archeological explorations soon, since this old city was on the Silk Road and had lots of complexes.

For those who are used to Roman, Byzantine, Ionian ruins, and thinking of no other civilizations in Anatolia, this is one of the top, most impressive place to visit. Very easy to reach, just by the Armenian border really an impressive old city. Take your time and don’t forget that it will either be too hot or cold according to the season.
